Temporary fireworks business a gamble for local family

BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Brian Vos is in the fireworks business this week.  Actually he opened one of his two stands just before the Memorial Day weekend.  This one is on M-13 right before the Beaver Road interchange in Bay County's Kawkawlin Township.  The other is on Bay Road, just south of Saginaw Valley State University.

"What we're trying to do is provide a quality product to the consumer," Vos said.

The rest of the year Vos runs a couple of funeral homes in Bay City.  His fiancé, Mary Jo, took the week off from her regular day job to work at the stands.  They decided it was worth a gamble to get into the pyrotechnical business a few weeks of the year.

"There is some times when we don't have people showing up, and that's kind of frustrating but then we have people showing up all at one time," Vos said.

Vos knows the next few days are critical to the success of his venture.  He's banking that people will wait until tomorrow or even Saturday, July 4, to buy those fireworks.

There are advantages and disadvantages to setting up a temporary tent like this along the side of the road.

"With the tent locations we're able to be a little bit more flexible with the pricing on it,” Vos said. “But also there is a downfall to having tents, because we're jeopardized by the weather some of the time."

Vos says this first year is a learning process, but he's confident they'll be back in 2016.

"It's a family owned local company, that we're hoping to continue on every year, which I know we will," Vos said.
