Soldier honored with park dedication

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

On Friday morning, dozens of people turned out to remember Sgt. Michael Cathcart in Bay City.

Cathcart, a Bay City native, was killed in action in Afghanistan last November.

Steve Beson is a Bay City store owner who decided that the Pocket Park should be named after Cathcart.

“I felt compelled to help bring some closure and mark a piece of earth after Michael’s name, and today it’s really coming together,” Beson said.

The ceremony holds a special meaning for a state legislator who actually lives in the neighborhood, Rep. Charles Brunner.

“This is the fabric of America,” Brunner said. “A neighborhood honoring one of their own and the folks that turned out today, it’s absolutely incredible come out at 9 o'clock on a holiday weekend when they could be doing other things.  The outpouring for Michael has just been very, very special."

A couple of Cathcart's service comrades were there to remember their friend and colleague.  His mother Jeanne lives in this neighborhood where the park is located.  She's humbled by the experience.

"This is an honor, there's a lot of people in this community who worked very hard to have this happen and I can't thank them enough," Jeanne Cathcart said.

Jeanne Cathcart has been by this park many times before, but now, the park has new meaning.

"I've been coming down and watching the progress, and it'll be a nice place to spend some time," Jeanne Cathcart said.
