Campgrounds packed for holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Debra Deroshia made her Independence Day reservation in January. For her there is no such thing as planning too early.

Deroshia drove from South Haven to camp at the Bay City State Park, knowing a reserved lot was waiting for her.

“Otherwise you just don't want to take the chance of not getting a lot and where you want to be,” Deroshia said.

Her planning paid off, because the park is packed, according to park ranger Brian Dunn.

“It's one of our very busy weekend, at the moment we are very busy with campers,” Dunn said. “We have quite a few people coming in today and we have no sites available for tonight.”

Still, a few people dropped in on Friday to try and get a site.

“We do our best to let them know of other campgrounds in the area but this time of year everything's full,” Dunn said.

But even if you weren't lucky enough to get a camping reservation, there's plenty of space to enjoy the state park during the day.

Connie Foco took a risk. She didn’t make a reservation at the park, knowing there are a few set aside for walk-ins.

“I go out on our boat and see the fireworks, I just love it,” Foco said.

But she knew the trick to snag one. Come early.

“Well I came last Wednesday,” Foco said. “Not this last Wednesday, but a week ago. So I've been here a week and a half already.”

The lesson here is call ahead, and come early.
