John Schmidt is a big fan of tall ships like these.

He visits Bay City every time the tall ship celebration sails into town.

“It's a lot of fun, I'm kind of a history buff so we enjoy it,” Schmidt said.

So when he heard the Nina and the Pinta are docked in Bay City for the holiday weekend, he had to come check them out.

“It's just a beautiful venue a great location and it's just very interesting,” Schmidt said.

These replicas of Columbus' ships tour together across the nation. When people step onboard--- it's a hands on museum experience.

“You get to explore the ships freely you can grab onto anything the little kids love it,” said Andrew Brittle, the relief captain.

Brittle and other crew members answers questions about what it’s like to sail these giant caravels.

Families from all over lined up early today to check out the stunning ships.

Monroe resident, Samantha Scheltema, had an interest in the ships long before the Nina and the Pinta arrived in Bay City.

"I've just always have liked the ropes and the knots and I've always wanted to go on one so this is as close as I can get for now,” Scheltema said.

The Nina and Pinta will stay in Bay City and be available for tours until Monday.
