Man charged after dog shot with arrow faces key hearing

LAPEER, Mich. (AP) -

A Michigan man charged with animal cruelty after his retriever was found wounded with a crossbow arrow in the top of her head is facing a key court hearing.

The District Court for Lapeer County says a hearing to determine if the case against Christopher Scott goes to trial began on Wednesday and is scheduled to resume July 23.

The dog named Gemma was found wandering in March. The arrow was lodged above her left eye and was later removed by a veterinarian.

Scott's lawyer has said the shooting was justified because the dog killed another dog. They want the case to be dismissed.

The man from Lapeer County's Goodland Township faces up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
