Facing quality beefs, Flint water system adds carbon filter

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Flint's water system is adding a carbon filtration system within the next few weeks, a move that the city says will cut a class of pollutants.

City spokesman Jason Lorenz said Thursday that the $1.6 million carbon filters are expected to significantly reduce the level of trihalomethanes.

Flint began drawing water from the Flint River last year after ending its connection to the Detroit water system in a cost-cutting move.

Some residents have complained about the smell, taste and appearance of the water since the changeover.

A group protesting Flint's water problems and cutoffs of water service to poor Detroit residents because of unpaid water bills began a 70-mile march from Detroit to Flint last Friday. The marchers are scheduled to rally in Flint on Friday.
