CLARE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan deputy responds to a call of an unattended fire and ends up with the suspect allegedly assaulting him, and trying to take his weapon.

It happened on July 2 in Clare County.

Investigators say a deputy was called out to the 1100 block of Pineview Street in Hayes Township after someone called about a fire with a strong garbage odor.

When the deputy arrived he found 60-year-old Lance Sample of Harrison burning garbage in the fire pit.

Once Sample put the fire out, investigators say he charged the deputy, and began to attack him. Sample also allegedly tried to grab the deputy’s service weapon from its holster.

Neighbors came to the deputy’s aid, and Sample was placed under arrest.

He was arraigned on July 7 for multiple charges.
