Police: Man arrested on drug charges released, steals vehicle

CLARE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Clare County man was arrested for drug charges and once he was out on bond for medical treatment he fled the hospital and allegedly committed additional crimes.

Derrick Newell, of Lake, was arrested on June 22 for selling marijuana out of his residence in Clare County’s Garfield Township.

Deputies located drug paraphernalia and marijuana inside the 28-year-old’s residence, police said.

Newell was lodged at the Clare County Jail. On June 24 he was arraigned for delivering and manufacturing marijuana. He remained in jail, police said.

On June 29 he was arraigned on additional charges of malicious destruction of police property and a habitual third offense notice.

Newell was given a bond for medical treatment on June 29 with a stipulation that he had to remain under medical care or he would be in violation of his bond, police said.

Later that day Newell allegedly fled from the Clare hospital and broke into a home where he stole a vehicle, police said.

He was located on July 3 in the Bluff Lake are of Garfield Township. Newell was transported back to the hospital for treatment and then lodged in the Clare County Jail.

Newell was arraigned on July 7 for second degree home invasion, unlawfully driving away a vehicle, and absconding bond.

His bond was set at $30,000 and he remains lodged at the Clare County Jail.
