Judge to sentence Detroit-area cancer doctor in fraud scheme

DETROIT (AP) -

Sobbing deeply, a Detroit-area cancer doctor facing up to life in prison for poisoning patients with needless treatments says power and greed were at the root of his crimes.

Dr. Farid Fata paused repeatedly to control his emotions as he begged for mercy Friday from federal Judge Paul Borman.

Fata pocketed millions of dollars from insurers while giving more than 500 unwitting patients excessive and debilitating treatments.

He told the judge that he violated his medical oath and caused "anguish, hardship and pain." The 50-year-old Fata last year pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.

Prosecutor Catherine Dick asked for a 175-year prison sentence. She says there's no way "to quantify the suffering" by patients who were exposed to unnecessary chemotherapy and other drugs.
