Hundreds descend on Vassar for week of service

Posted: Updated:

The sounds of air pumps filled the classrooms at Vassar High School Sunday as hundreds of students descended on the facility.

They'll be spending the whole week sleeping in the school for one great cause.

"We go to a worksite," Logan McDaniel explained. "And we help restore houses or build things they need and help others who need help."

McDaniel is just of the many REACH volunteers who will be sprucing up Vassar. But why the small Tuscola County town?

"We've had a youth group that's been coming to our camps for many years, and they've traveled to many different locations and they've really said, you know what, we could really do this in our own backyard," said Paul Richardson.

But why put all this hard work in? The youngsters and adults alike said: to serve God.

"He wants us to be his hands and feet and serve people with no strings attached, and it's just our way to give back to the community and spread Jesus' love," said Richardson.

"A lot of people today think that the younger kids aren't that faithful, and they're kind of losing hope in their generation," said McDaniel. "It's kind of nice for them to see that we care that much, and we come out here and give it our best."

The hundreds of volunteers will in Vassar until the end of the work week.
