Controversial oil pipeline under Mackinac Bridge to be discussed today

LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan officials are preparing to issue a long-anticipated report on pipelines transporting oil and other petroleum products around the state, including a controversial line that runs beneath the scenic waterway where Lakes Huron and Michigan meet.

Attorney General Bill Schuette and Dan Wyant, director of the Department of Environmental Quality, have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to release a report from a task force they appointed last year.

It was prompted by concerns about two side-by-side pipes beneath the Straits of Mackinac that carry nearly 23 million gallons of crude oil daily. Enbridge Energy Partners LP owns them and says they're in good shape.

Environmental groups want them shut down. They fear a spill similar to one from another Enbridge pipeline that severely polluted the Kalamazoo River in 2010.
