Ballot initiative aims to guarantee paid sick leave

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A new ballot initiative is aimed at guaranteeing Michigan workers receive paid sick leave.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, millions of people who work more than 40 hours a week don’t get paid when they need a sick day.

In March 2014, 74-percent of full-time workers were offered paid sick leave plans.

The average is even less for those working at smaller establishments rather than medium or large corporations.

The Time to Care Coalition wants to change that for Michiganders.

Its new ballot initiative is aimed at giving full-time workers an hour of paid sick time for every 40 hours worked.

While some people, like Jodi Abriel, applauded the idea on our Facebook page, saying “Everyone should have sick days. Shed a few dollars lining those CEO’s pockets and help the little guy.”

But others like Roland Bedell say the move could have a ripple effect. “Don’t be surprised if the cost of goods and services rise as employers pass that cost on.”

The Time to Care Coalition hopes to get 300,000 signatures over the next few months to have it on the 2016 ballot.
