Lake Callis Recreational Park re-opens, offers new safety measures

Joe Byrd and his two kids wanted to spend some time by the water, so they stopped by Davison Township's Lake Callis park.

It's the first time the park has been open since the disappearance of Omarion Humphrey.

"It's just an unfortunate thing, and obviously the community is heartbroken about it," Byrd said.

After nearly a week-long search, Omarion’s body was found on Friday in the lake.

Park manager Casey Reed said despite dreary skies kids were out today enjoying the splash pad.

"Today we're open. We're open from 9 to 9, we'll be open every day, Sunday through Saturday," Reed said.

The lake has also been reopened with new safety features.

Despite the tragedy, which occurred while Omarion was under the supervision of a foster family, parents said they're not scared to bring their kids here.

"Let's call it was it is, it was a tragedy,” Byrd said. “You can't blame the park. This is like any other park in the State of Michigan or in the country for that matter. You're here on your own risk, and it's your responsibility to watch over your own children."

The park does want to remind visitors that there are no lifeguards, so as long as you keep a close eye on the little ones, everyone can have fun.
