VASSAR, MI (WNEM) -

When Earvin “Tiny” King came home from watching Fourth of July fireworks, he was hungry.

“I crossed my arms like that and I laid my head down and let the grease get hot,” King said.

But as he was waiting for his skillet to heat up to fry some fish, he fell asleep.

“There was burning in the skillet, straight up in the hood of the stove,” King said.

King woke to flames, and in a panic he ran from the house. Now what's left of his Vassar home is nothing more than charred wood.

“I was lucky man, everybody says I was lucky,” King said.

But now, King is in a tough situation. He needs a place to live. He's been staying at a motel, but he can't stay there forever.

“Right now I just can't afford to pay $225 a week for a motel,” King said. “I'm on a fixed income, I don't have no money in my pocket left.”

But lucky for King, he has a good friend, in Melodie Auten.

“I was heart-sick. I cried,” Auten said.

Auten has been calling churches, the Red Cross, and now has reached out to TV5 to get some help for her friend.

“He needs furniture, just like you and I need when we start out with our first home,” Auten said. “That's what it's going to be for Tiny.”

Throughout all of this, King also has some insurance problems that will take a while to sort out. In the meantime he really needs a place to stay.

“I got so much on my plate right now, I don't know which way I'm going,” King said.

Auten said King has some health issues, so she would like to see him somewhere safe and close to his doctors.

“It would mean the world to me,” Auten said. “I said to me and I said to my husband, if I ever wanted anything, this would be it.”

And King said if he even has a place to stay temporarily, he will earn his keep.

“Hey I'm a good cook! Outside cooking, inside cooking,” King said. “I ain’t much of a housekeeper, but I can cook!
