Critics say Amazon Prime Day misses mark for Christmas in July sale

Posted: Updated:

Bose headphones: $138. A Go-Pro camera bundle: $500. Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray trilogy: $27.99.

Those are the deals for Amazon’s Prime Day. Forget Black Friday, Amazon says these are the deals to be waiting for. And customers are responding.

“I love the Black Friday in November and everything, so I think in July and online would be a great idea,” said Martin Taylor.

For one day only, you can get the Amazon Kindle for $30 off and a flat-screen television for under $200.

It’s Christmas in July – but what’s the catch? These deals are only available for Amazon Prime members, which is a $99 yearly fee, which leaves many wondering if these deals are even worth it.

“I myself might be leery about it,” said Mary Lou Perez. “I guess it's OK, but when you think about it, it may just equal out to the same.”

Critics of Prime day said the big deals are few and far between, leaving some to compare it to a big garage sale. Featured sales include items like toilet paper, Flintstones vitamins, hand lotion – things you could find at your local store.

At the Walmart on Bay Road in Saginaw, a bottle of Biotin is $4.50, but on Amazon’s Prime Day deal, the same thing is $12. A Brita water pitcher is $22 at Walmart but on Amazon it’s $27.

Even with the sales on amazon today, many people said they still don't think it would prompt them to subscribe to amazon prime.

“I probably would shop at a local store looking for the sales that way,” Perez said.
