In home security, 'everyone has something worth protecting'

Surveillance cameras often catch thieves in the act at places like malls and convenience stores.

But now, more and more homeowners are installing cameras as well, to watch over their personal space, according to security consultant Fred Wydra.

"We're getting calls monthly. If not weekly from people interested in protecting their homes with cameras," Wydra said.

Wydra works for Audio Central Alarms in Saginaw. He said, when robbers strike, video cameras provide homeowners with an extra layer of security.

"Sometimes they leave before the police get there,” Wydra said. “If you have camera footage that way you can identify the person breaking into your home."

A couple in Isabella County installed a camera in their bedroom. They thought some items were missing.

And the video confirms their suspicion.

It shows two armed men walking around the room going through their stuff.

Wydra said any homeowner can have this level of security. The cost for a basic package is about $1,000-$1,500.

While some say cost of high tech security is a bit too high, others argue you can't put a price on peace of mind.

"Everybody has something worth protecting," Wydra said.
