Volunteers are stepping up to clean up Wickes Park

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The city doesn’t have the money to maintain the park. So volunteers like Sharon Dinse are stepping in to help.

"We need neighborhood parks," Dinse said.

Dinse is with the group get outside for a healthy inside. The organization wants to raise money for Saginaw's recreation areas. Wickes Park is at the top of the list.

"We would like to see it expand to get a fitness area here," Dinse said.

Since our story first aired on Tuesday people are already stepping up, cleaning up piles of dumped auto parts.

But now, that raises the issue of illegal dumping, which is something that has plagued this park for years. Now Sheriff William Federspiel said he wants to address that.

"We'll do an investigation on it,” Federspiel said. “We'll set up cameras and we'll try and catch the folks that are doing it and bring them to justice."

Federspiel is also working on getting a cleaning crew together for the park.

"There's a need, lets help out," he said.

Mayor Dennis Browning is also vowing to do his best to maintain the area. But he believes Wickes Park serves as more of wildlife preserve.

"I have families fishing on the river. They're sitting there fishing on the river,” Browning said. “That's what this park is for."

Whatever people use it for, everyone we spoke to agrees the park is going to need a little help.
