Police chase disrupts usual quiet of Flint neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

A police chase turned into a double shooting Thursday morning, injuring two suspects.

The chase ended just a few houses away from Flint resident Margarita Miller and her family’s home.

“The shooting thing – you just don’t expect that,” Miller said.

Miller said her neighborhood near Greenbrook and Raspberry Lanes in Flint is usually quiet.

Imagine her surprise when she heard tires screech and shots fired around 2:30 this morning.

“I told my grandson to get down because that's when the shooting started,” Miller said. “And then it was covered with cops and we just stayed down until everything was calmed down.”

Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser said it all started as a routine traffic stop.

After the suspects fled, a police chase began which lasted nearly 5 minutes.

Another police vehicle came to assist. Troopers used a maneuver to stop the suspects.

“The driver intentionally rammed a state police car, then slammed the vehicle into reverse and attempted to run over troopers,” Kaiser said. “It was at this point to protect their lives troopers opened fire on the vehicle.”

The four troopers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave. Kaiser said that doesn't mean they did anything wrong, but they're just following protocol.

The two suspects were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. An 18-year-old Flint man was shot in the wrist and a 36-year-old Flint man was hit in the thigh and abdomen.

From what she witnessed Miller said the troopers made the right choice and thanks them for helping keep her neighborhood safe.

“They definitely did the right thing,” Miller said. “They served and protected us.”
