New law may allow drinking on pub pedal trolleys

Posted: Updated:

"Probably 99 percent of the time that's the first question: somebody asks, can I have my own beer on board."

And that may soon happen on-board one of these Sunrise Pedal Trolley's in Bay City.  Ashley Anderson owns the trolley.  It's a favorite of bachelorette and bachelor parties, rented to go from bar to bar.  But until yesterday you couldn't drink on the trolley.  Now, if the Bay City Commission gives its blessing, riders could soon do so on this trolley.

"It may increase my business, we'll still patronize our downtown merchants, we have great relationships with them," Anderson said.

Under the new law people who rent the trolleys would be allowed to BYOB to drink on board.  It has to be in a can or plastic container, and can be beer or wine. The company that runs the 15-rider cabs must make sure that its driver is sober.

If you're worried about inebriated passengers on board this trolley, there shouldn't be any worries they're taking steps to make sure that doesn't happen.

Anderson thinks by allowing people a bit more time in bars they won't hurry and down drinks to rush off to another pub.

"I probably will be extending tours to three hours next year so we aren't running in and out of a bar,” Anderson said. “So having that I think it's actually going to slow people down with their drinking, and not being in such a hurry on the tour."

Anderson has the liability insurance in place in order for people to drink and pedal on her trolley. Also under the new law people have to sign a waiver, and if the operator believes they're drunk and out of control they can be kicked off the trolley.

Anderson plans on approaching the city commission soon about giving her the approval to have her customers exercise their right to drink and pedal away.
