Attempted arsonist is victim's old flame

Posted: Updated:

Loretta Liddell came to her home last night and something wasn’t right.

"I came home yesterday about 11 o'clock,” Liddell said. “My door was open at the time I arrived into my house."

And something didn’t smell right.

"I seen a gas can on top of my porch," Liddell said.

Liddell said that gas can was empty. And when she stepped inside, she said she realized why: the home was doused with gasoline.

"Also smelled gas in the house," Liddell said.

Earlier today, she said she had no idea who would have tried to set her home on fire, but she noticed something else odd.

"It didn't show any signs of forced entry. My understanding is that someone I knew had to do this," Liddell said.

Saginaw County Assistant Prosecutor Chris Boyd said the clues left at the scene – the empty gas can and no forced entry – led police to someone Liddell did know. The father of her child.

"Charges were issued today on a Martell Peterson regarding an arson preparation to burn property," Boyd said.

Boyd said Peterson is Liddell's old flame. And he attempted, but failed, to set Liddell's home up in flames.

Prosecutors believe Peterson lit a piece of paper, and threw it on the floor.

"Our information indicates that this was a domestic dispute," Boyd said.

Liddell is left fanning out the fumes left behind. The worst part, according to Liddell, she is now pregnant with Peterson's child and worries it's unhealthy to live in the home while she carries his unborn baby.
