Woman receives new car after Gratiot Road crash

"He pointed out there and I was like, 'That's mine!'"

The surprise was a shiny new car for Savannah Peterson, a silver lining to a terrible accident.

"There was a black truck in front of me and all of a sudden it swerved out of the way and 'boom!'" Peterson said.

On July 7, Peterson and her daughter Aniya were traveling down Gratiot Road in her SUV.

That's when a sedan traveling the opposite way crossed the center line.

In a matter of seconds, her family's only vehicle – their lifeline for getting to work, school and appointments – was mangled.

The accident killed two people and injured another in the other car.

Petersen and 8 year-old Aniya suffered broken bones and bruises and spent the next several days in the hospital.

Injured and now out of a car, Peterson says those next few days were emotionally taxing.

"How am I going to get to and from and then I can't work no more, I have bills to pay, I have four children," Petersen said.

Little did she know, her step-dad Daryl Watson was secretly working on a plan.

"I tricked her, she didn't know it was coming," Watson said.

Dick Garber of Garber Automotive reached out to Watson wanting to help.

"He just opened his heart and he blessed her with a vehicle," Watson said.

On Tuesday, Peterson saw that blessing pull up outside her home.

Though Peterson and Aniyah have many weeks, if not months, of recovery left, Peterson said some of her stress is now lifted and her faith in humanity restored.

"To have people out here that have seen my story and are willing to do that, there are good people in this world still,” Peterson said. “It's just great to know that."
