Ballads and Brews celebrating maritime music and beer

Posted: Updated:

Shirley Roberts was out supervising the preparations along the Saginaw river at Veterans Memorial Park Friday morning for this year's Ballads and Brews Festival.

"We are so happy whenever we can produce a festival that brings people to our waterfront," Roberts said.

This festival features maritime music, the type you'd hear back in the day from sailors who made their living on the Great Lakes and beer. As for the brews, there will be several tasty variations that folks will be able to quaff down, some produced right here in Bay City.

A new feature at Ballads and Brews this year will be a food truck rally. That means event goers will have some tasty meal choices.

"Killer hibachi, maybe gourmet grilled cheese, we're not sure yet, barbecue, German sausage, tamale rose, we have a number of food trucks coming in this afternoon, it'll be fun," Roberts said.

Saturday is Pirate Day at this festival, which leads to a very important question: do you have to talk like a pirate?

"You know, like some point everyone talks like a pirate," Roberts said.

Ballads and Brews is a spinoff of the Tall Ships celebration. It's held on the years when the tall ships aren't here.  Since those vessels come to Bay City next summer, you won't have another Ballads and Brews after this year's event until 2017.

"The weather's going to be great for a beer festival so we hope everyone can come and enjoy," Roberts said.
