SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man is in the hospital after he crashed his four-wheeler into a ditch.

The accident happened early Saturday morning on Cumber Road, near Frieburger Road in Sanilac County’s Austin Township.

The 47-year-old driver, from Snover, was driving a 2012 Honda Rincon east on Cumber Road when he lost control of the vehicle, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office said.

The vehicle exited the roadway and struck the north side ditch bank. That caused the vehicle to overturn, throwing the driver into the ditch, police said.

The driver was located by a passing motorist about 8:25 a.m.

It has not been determined when the crash happened, but local residents told police they last heard a four-wheeler on the road about 1 a.m.

The driver was transported to Hills and Dale Hospital in Cass City before later being transported to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw for serious injuries, police said.

The driver was not wearing a helmet and alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, police said.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Bingham Township EMS and Fire.
