Michigan allows conceal carry for National Guard with permit

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A growing number of states believe National Guard service people should be armed, including Texas, Florida and Indiana.

These new mandates are coming after a lone gunman shot and killed five unarmed servicemen at military installations in Chattanooga last week.

Are there changes in store for Michigan? Capt. Corissa Eardon, a National Guard spokeswoman, said they already have.

"Our main concern is always going to be our service members and their families," Eardon said.

In a phone interview Eardon said Michigan updated its rules in March allowing soldiers who have a valid concealed carry license to carry arms at work.

"If they have a valid permit they can carry," Eardon said.

But if the service man or woman doesn't have a permit he or she can't carry, some days this is the right way to protect everyone.

"I think they should have some type of training,” Eardon said.
