Nick Alfano opened Alfano's Stride Rite in downtown Saginaw back in 1964.

"Good loyal customers are what kept this store going," Alfano said.

As owner of a children's shoe store, he's seen many of his customers literally grown up before his eyes.

But Alfano won't be fitting many more babies for their first pair of shoes. After more than 50 years in business, he's decided to close up shop.

"The whole store is on sale,” Alfano said. “Trying to get rid of everything fixtures, furniture."

Calvin Page said he didn't have a lot of shoes growing up. Now that he can afford it, he wants his son to have a variety of pairs.

"I can't believe you're closing,” Page said.

Alfano's has always been his favorite place to go.

“This store has been around you know,” Page said. “A lot of people love coming here buying shows."

At one point, Alfano said he was one of the top Stride Rite dealers in the entire country. But, he says people don't shop like they used to.

"You want to buy children’s shoes. You go online or the outlets,” Alfano said. “Outlets are really affecting business."

Alfano is closing all of his five remaining stores, he said it's time to move on.

But customers say he and his store will be missed.

"So used to coming here since he was little. So, it's sad," Page said.

Alfano said, “Some customers have been coming in crying, hugging the managers. But it's got to come to an end.
