Veterans respond to vandalized flags at American Legion

SANFORD, MI (WNEM) -

On Friday, vandals ripped one flag and stole another from an American Legion Post in Sanford.

Post leadership posted to their Facebook account, sharing a photo of the torn flag, asking for the ripped flag back to “take care of it properly.”

When Lester Peters arrived at the American Legion Post in Sanford, he immediately noticed the American flags were missing.

"The one flag was missing and it drew my attention to the flag that was torn," Peters said.

Police were notified of the vandalism.

Peters said some commented that the flags were vandalized hours after the shooting rampage in Chattanooga, were five military service members were killed.

Mark Authier, post commander, said the flags have been replaced.

“Why would anyone do such a thing? It’s a symbol,” Authier said. “For our veterans here and for our veterans across the nation only fight for the flag as a symbol, but we’re sworn to protect democracy, freedom and justice. It’s not like we’re not going to replace it.”
