National Rat Catcher's Day

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

As we’ve come to discover, there is a day for everything. And today is National Rat Catcher’s Day.

The day commemorates the famous Pied Piper of Hamelin. But also is a day to say “thank you” to exterminators.

According to the tale, German residents in the town of Hamelin hired a man to rid their village of rats by playing his flute.

But after the job was done, the residents refused to pay the strangely dressed man.

So the Pied Piper played his flute again, enticing all the children to follow him and disappear.

This day is also sometimes celebrated on June 26 because that’s the day the Brothers Grimm say the Pied Piper lead the children out of town.

But the poem written by Robert Browning about the Pied Piper states the day as July 22.
