Community reacts to accusations of sex crimes against doctor

Posted: Updated:

Marsha Whisman is her grand-daughter's biggest fan.

On Wednesday, Whisman was at the diamond cheering her on, maybe a little louder than normal as a dark cloud looms over a local doctor who is a candidate for state representative has been accused of a sex crime.

"Of course, with a 13 year old, 14 year old granddaughter and a lot of her friends, that terrifies me to think that these things go on," Whisman said.

Dr. Vijay Kumar is charged with criminal sexual conduct in the second degree.

According to the warrant, he used his authoritative position to victimize a young teenage girl back in August 2013.

"Whether he's a doctor, or a lawyer, I don't really care what he is, but if it's true, then he should get what he deserves," Whisman said.

Kumar owns five physical therapy businesses in Ogemaw County and was nominated by former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to sit on the Michigan Board of Physical Therapy.

He is also a Republican candidate, running for local state representative in 2016.

He's involved in different organizations, including the Ogemaw County Republican Party where he served as treasurer.

Whisman says her judgement against Kumar won't come until he's had due process, but in the meantime, she plans on being protective of her granddaughter.

"I think it's an eye opener for all parents, and grandparents to keep their eyes and ears open and protect their children," Whisman said.
