Mid-Michigan therapist being investigated by state, federal agencies, license suspended

WEST BRANCH, MI (WNEM) -

A mid-Michigan community is reeling in light of accusations of sex crimes and fraud have been made against a physical therapist.

"You put your faith and trust in these people and they owe it to us to be honest," said Dennis Weiss, a Medicare patient.

Vijay Kumar owns five physical therapy locations in mid-Michigan. The Ogemaw County prosecutor issued a press release and said records were seized at all five of the locations. His occupational license has now been suspended, meaning he cannot practice.

At least five other government agencies at the state and federal level are involved in the investigation that sources said could total more than $500,000 in false Medicare and insurance payments.

"I just hope they find out and get to the bottom of it, and hopefully this will be a lesson for other people trying to scam our system," said Kathy Kraezlein.

A spokesman from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said the attorney general’s office and FBI are reviewing Kumar’s billing records.

Medicare patients like Weiss said if the allegations are true, Kumar should be incarcerated.

"If someone is gaming the system you know they ought to put them in jail and throw away the key, that's wrong," Weiss said.
