Revitalization efforts in Old Town taking off

Posted: Updated:

The past comes back to life in Old Town Saginaw.  Right here, at the corner of Court and Michigan, crews re-create the Weinberg-Pankonin Drug Store sign.  The store was in business for decades before it shuttered up a few years ago.  Jim Fives is the head-painter.

"I determined it was painted in 1946 by Ike Kozac," Fives said. "For me it's a real honor to be redoing the work that he has originally done."

On that block a skate shop has opened, and a wellness center is set to open soon. Other businesses are set to open or soon including: a smoothie shop, a brewing company, a distillery and a pizzeria – not to mention some new brownstones to live in.

Garrett Williams recently opened his shoe repair shop on Court Street.  The 21 year old loves his new shop and its new location.

"I think it's great, you know, I'm glad they're re-doing the outside, and I just think to bring people down here not only just to come to the bars but to come down and get your shoes fixed, they're opening a salon right at the corner there," Williams said.

Meanwhile business apparently is in the blood of Williams. His grandmother used to be a business owner in Saginaw, he's excited to be right in the middle of this revitalization effort going on in Old Town.

"My grandma used to own the lampshade nook over on mason and court and I thought one reason I moved down here was because of her, you know, running a successful business down here, and I plan on doing the same," Williams said.
