Mid-Michigan business sees boom following Supreme Court marriage equality decision

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer's challenge to Michigan’s same sex marriage ban helped pave the way for other couples across the state.

Now they are finalizing their own wedding plans.

And that includes choosing a Midland bakery to design their cake.

Carrie Fisher owns the Gourmet Cupcake Shop.

“I was very flattered,” Fisher said.

She said the Detroit-area couple first reached out to her through social media.

“We have 15,000 fans on Facebook and so they looked at our online portfolio and they contacted us and we'd love to have you do our wedding cake,” Fisher said.

Rowse and DeBoer recently visited the Midland cupcake shop for a tasting. Fisher said she's keeping her cake design for their wedding next month a secret for now.

"I can tell you this is one of the cakes that they liked and this is a cake we've been doing for four or five years," Fisher said.

The Gourmet Cupcake Shop has three locations in mid-Michigan and has made cakes for commitment ceremonies for years. Now they couldn't be happier to be a part of this historic wedding.

“People do contact us and say are you comfortable with this? We reassured them that it's not a problem and from there they tasted the product and really liked it," Fisher said.

Fisher said ever since the Supreme Court decision came down last month, making same sex marriage legal, her business has been booming with new customers.

And she's ready to help make their wedding dreams come true.

“We've been booking about four or five extra weddings a week for the rest of the year so it's really exciting,” Fisher said.
