Michigan woman sentenced to prison for smothering newborn

MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) -

An 18-year-old western Michigan woman has been sentenced to prison for suffocating her newborn daughter.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports Jessica Lynn Brewster was sentenced Thursday to between 19 months and 15 years. The Muskegon woman earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter by criminal negligence.

Authorities say Brewster suffocated her baby with a towel to silence her crying on Oct. 15. She had just given birth in a bathroom in her family's house.

A police report says Brewster said she held a towel over the baby's face when she heard footsteps. The body was found buried in November outside a senior apartment complex where Brewster's great-grandmother lived.

Authorities say Brewster said she concealed her pregnancy and panicked when she gave birth because she was afraid of what her family would think.
