Police: Boy accidentally shoots friend after finding shotgun in field

Posted: Updated:

A loud pop, the sound of a gun, echoed close to home where Mid-Michigan kids play and live.

A place where they should be able to feel safe.

Last Friday a group of kids stumbled across the shot gun and Michigan State Police said what happened next shouldn't have happened at all.

“The 9-year-old boy handling the shotgun accidentally shot his friend, another 9-year-old in the right bicep,” said Lt. David Kaiser, with MSP.

Police said the gun was found in an open field near town homes in Saginaw. Residents who live there said there was a lot of chaos the night of the shooting and it was pretty scary.

Kaiser said the boy is not OK and his injuries are pretty bad.

“A shotgun blast at very short range, there's a possibility he could lose use or lose the arm,” Kaiser said.

Police believe they know where the shot gun came from. They said it could be connected to a shooting in Saginaw back in June. It’s possible one of the suspects dumped the gun in the field, police said.

“During that shooting, a shotgun was used to shoot up a house. We have gathered evidence from that scene, as well as shotgun shells from the shotgun the kids found,” Kaiser said.

Kaiser said the terrible accident serves as a reminder for kids to call for help instead of ever touching a gun.

“Get a hold of the police, dial 911. We'll take that weapon to make sure we don't have another incident like this,” Kaiser said.
