A Mid-Michigan Sheriff’s Department has commissioned a new patrol boat named in honor of a former Huron County Sheriff who lost his life in the line of duty.

The military surplus, 27-foot Boston Whaler Patrol Boat was named after Joseph J. Murray.

Murray died in June of 1932 after falling overboard near Oak Beach while searching for nets that were set illegally.

The recently refurbished boat replaces a boat that has been in service since 1988.
