SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

After a young boy shot his friend in the arm after finding a loaded gun in the grass, a local organization trying to fight back against a flood of weapons in the community.

Pastor Larry Camel is the CEO of Parishioners on Patrol.

“Well I think it's a tragedy, a travesty for the young boy to find a gun and not turn it in but to take and shoot somebody with it,” Camel said.

He works with law enforcement and the community to reduce violence in Saginaw.

“It said we're really in trouble. We need to educate our children about safety of guns,” Camel said.

Camel is the pastor at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, and he knows weapons have flooded his community.

“It's not hard to get a gun. You can buy a gun on the street, that's how these young boys are getting these guns and perpetrating these crimes,” Carmel said.

Some of these guns people are finding come from abandoned houses. They break in, and steal the guns that have been left there.

“So guns are accessible in our community. But something does need to be done about it,” Carmel said.

Camel said it's just far too easy and far too common for young people to have and use a gun. He'd like to see a program of some sort to help change that.

“Some initiative to take guns off the streets, maybe a buyback program, some incentive to turn in weapons,” Camel said.

But Saginaw isn’t the only place it's too easy for a gun to fall into the wrong hands.

“I'd say all inner-cities have this problem when you talk about weapons or guns, hiding guns, and children being accessible to guns,” Camel said. “There's a lot of things we can do to educate the community about guns and making it safe for young people to be around guns.”
