Bay City tradition puts spotlight on local businesses

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

People like Judy Jaffe don't even need to leave home to feel like they're on vacation.

“I like the water, I like the music, I like the restaurants, I like walking every place,” Jaffe said.

Or to score a good deal.

“There's lots of ice cream, there's lots of people, it's just the place to be in the summer time,” Jaffe said. “You support your community and have a really good time.

One of her favorite parts of summer is the decades-old tradition of Bay City's Downtown Sidewalk Days, three-days of local businesses marking down their prices, and turning up their foot traffic.

It's really a legitimate sale, it's not the fake stuff you see in some of the big box stores,” said Barbara Bosco.

Bosco owns Herman Hiss & Co., which has been a downtown staple for 100 years. She promises to make the sales worth your while.

”I think people do think twice now about shopping local, and it certainly helps us that they want to support their local businesses,” Bosco said.

Sweet Peach Children's Boutique is using sidewalk days to shift gears, to a shopper’s benefit.

“Most things are 50-60 percent off, trying to clear out the summer stuff, make room for fall arrivals that'll be coming soon,” said Barb Gwizdala, owner of Sweet Peach.

But none of this would go so smoothly every year if it weren't for these locally-owned businesses looking out for each other -- they make customers feel more like family, and you really can't put a price tag on that.

“If we are aware of something someone else has, we'll send them in that direction as we hope they do the same,” Gwizdala said.

If you weren't able to make it to Bay City's Downtown Sidewalk Days today, don't worry because all of those deals are going on Saturday.

But perhaps your biggest challenge will be finding a parking space.
