LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse won their legal battle for marriage equality in Michigan, and the rest of the United States.

But after taking their case to the highest law in the land, there are nearly $2 million in legal fees. They are asking a federal judge to make the state  of Michigan to foot the bill.

"Reimbursing the plaintiffs for their legal costs is the right thing to do," said Sen. Curtis Hertel, Jr. (D-East Lansing). "However, Schuette's poor decisions and playing with taxpayer dollars is risky business that should never have happened to begin with."

Now, Hertel is calling for Attorney General Bill Schuette's office to cover the cost.

"The hard-working people of Michigan and their families should not have to suffer because of a Republican's radical agenda," Hertel said. "Political posturing at the risk of taxpayer dollars should not be allowed to happen."

Schuette's gross annual operating budget is $92.1 million for the coming fiscal year.
