Saginaw School Board hires new superintendent

Posted: Updated:

The Saginaw School Board has hired a new superintendent, albeit, unconventionally.

Members voted to hire Nathaniel McClain as the new superintendent. He’s a former principal at Arthur Hill high school and is currently the assistant superintendent.

On the agenda tonight however, the school board had only planned to screen candidates. First, they voted to only interview one applicant, which passed 4-3 after a 40-minute discussion. Then, a second motion was made to offer that one applicant the job and negotiate the contract, which passed 6-1.

But one school board member believes the process was all wrong, and not in the best interests of the school district.

"We gather some names and they threw all those in the trash," said Rudy Patterson.

Patterson was the only dissenting vote in the second motion to offer McClain the job. He said the school district needs a superintendent with experience.

"Out of the seven applicants, five of them were superintendents already," Patterson said.

Board president Ruth Ann Knapp defends the action, and said she didn't know the action was going to happen, but feels the board made the right choice.

This comes on the heels of interim-superintendent Kelley Peatross retiring at the end of last month. She said she was fed up with the board’s antics, describing them as counter-productive to the future of the district.

McClain said he’s ready to take on the job.

“Just looking forward to working with the board, developing a vision, a co-constructed vision, that will support our families within this community,” McClain said.

McClain and the school board still have to come to terms with the contract.
