Veteran denied CDL after 6 years experience in National Guard

GRATIOT COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Blaine Sullivan spent six years in the National Guard.

He's been to Kuwait, driving large military vehicles and even has this operator's permit, signed by his commander, which says he's qualified to drive them.

So he filled out the application, and also got that signed by his commander.

But it hasn't been good enough for the State of Michigan.   He wants to drive trucks commercially here in Michigan and thought it would be easy to get a waiver for the commercial license skills.

"I kind of feel like I'm being jerked around," Sullivan said.

Under state law, a comparable military license qualifies you to get a waiver for a commercial driver's license test.

The state said not so fast.  Sullivan appealed to us to ask the tough questions.

"The women in the office there were actually going to give me my CDL-A, but some office in Lansing actually contacted them and denied my waiver, even though I followed the rules," Sullivan said.

Sullivan contacted TV5 on Wednesday after seeing our recent story of another veteran, who had trouble getting state EMT certification after serving as a medic in the military for a decade.

"I actually saw the article on the medic of 10 years who was denied his waiver. And that's when my wife said, maybe you should contact them because you're in the same boat," Sullivan said.

After hearing Sullivan's concerns, we decided to give a call to the Secretary of State's office to ask the tough questions.

But Wednesday the secretary of state's communications office said they can't even find Sullivan's application in their system. Saying they'll have to do further research before they can give a firm answer as to why Sullivan was denied and what can be done to rectify the situation. That all changed one day later when TV5 got Sullivan results. Following our call he received his waiver from the Secretary of State, allowing him to get his CDL license.
