Cold air funnel spotted in Mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:

Plenty of viewer photos have been sent in showing a funnel-like cloud spotted near Unionville in Tuscola County yesterday evening. After doing some digging, it appears this was a cold air funnel cloud.

Cold air funnels form in cool air masses, often behind cold fronts, which passed through Mid-Michigan yesterday. The cool and windy conditions in the lower atmosphere interact with air flowing in a different direction in the middle atmosphere and rotation follows. When the air is moist like it was yesterday with dew points in the middle 70s, it condenses and forms the cold air funnel cloud.

Although cold air funnels can touch the ground and form into tornadoes, this is a very rare occurrence. Damage from cold air funnels is also very rare. However, if you do see a cold air funnel starting to form, you should take the same precautions that you do during a tornado to ensure your safety.
