Owner surrenders seven dogs after allegations of abuse, neglect turn out to be false

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

On Thursday, seven dogs were surrendered after a good deed got out of hand.

According to Tricia Barnes, with Saginaw Co. Animal Control, their owner’s heart was in the right place.

“She was just trying to do the right thing, but got overwhelmed,” Barnes said.

Eight dogs were living inside a Saginaw home when neighbors alerted TV5 to their concerns of potential abuse and neglect.

“The dogs are in really good health, the dogs just kept having puppies and she kept trying to find new dog owners,” Barnes said.

The neighbors believed the owner was no longer living in the home and left the dogs alone.

When Animal Control arrived at the house, they discovered a totally different picture.

“I just missed her yesterday.  She's been here,” Barnes said. “There was a great big container of food and water.”

The owner agreed to give up seven of the eight dogs.

“Some of them are fairly aggressive, we're going to see if we can get some rescues to work with us,” Barnes said.

The owner declined to give her name, but wanted to explain the situation.

“Four of the dogs in the first place were only supposed to be temporary, we were supposed to be finding homes for them,” the owner said.

Many of the dogs are pit-bull mixes, which is a breed she said isn’t appealing to many potential dog owners.

The owner said the dogs became too much to handle financially, and she didn’t know where to turn.

“We have no car, so our problem was trying to even get them some place,” the owner said.

She kept one of the eight dogs, but she said it was an emotional day, giving up the others. But she feels a lot better knowing they will be cared for.

“One dog, I can handle,” she said.

Barnes said the dogs will be taken to a local vet to be evaluated.
