Brothers open business, build it using local businesses

Hair styling has been a part of Donovan and Angelo Ortega's lives since they were kids. Their family has been in the business of making people look and feel their best for about 30 years.

“We've actually been working on a second location for probably about 2 or 3 years,” Angelo Ortega said.

The brothers already own Shaper's Salon in Saginaw with their mom. It has proven to be extremely successful and this is their newest venture.

Don Angelo's is a loft-style retreat to get pampered, right by the river, in the up and coming uptown section of Bay City.

“We see people here all the time going for runs, riding their bikes, walking their dogs, so it's a really cool atmosphere to be a part of,” Donovan Ortega said.

One of the main goals of this salon in the second location was to have a better convenience factor for their clients, but also to have a bigger city feel.

“The main difference is primarily the feel and the look of it – everything else is the same.  All of our services that we offer at Shaper's will be offered here as well,” Donovan Ortega said.

From the styling stations, to the intimate 6-chair setting, its industrial, modern look certainly fits right in to this newly-built neighborhood.

“We were very excited to be a part of it when they approached us about the development.  We also saw the need from the Bay City and Midland clientele, and it was an opportunity we really couldn't pass by,” Donovan Ortega said.

Perhaps what the brothers are most proud of is how the salon was built all with the help of Michigan-made businesses.

“The welding we have done here is done by Kelly Industrial in St. Charles, the stations we had built through glass tender in Saginaw,” Angelo Ortega said.

And, if you want to change up your look here at the new salon, they're booking up fast, but will do their best to find a spot for you to experience this eclectic escape.

“We can always find room for a new guest,” Donovan Ortega said.
