METAMORA, MI (WNEM) -

A vigil will be held on July 31 for the 17-year-old who drowned while attempting to swim across a lake.

A dive team recovered the body of Troy Paxton in Lake Minnawanna.

The Lapeer County Sheriff's Department said Paxton tried to swim across the lake about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Another boy, who barely made it, had to turn on his back.

"The 17-year old was having trouble, told him to roll on his back, told him to roll over and was going to go get a boat to go back and help his friend. He turned around and his friend went under," police said.

Paxton's body was recovered just after 6 p.m.

The two friends had been visiting the Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area.

Paxton was a Flint resident and student at Kearsley High School where he was a member of the varsity bowling team.

The team is holding a candlelight vigil at Richfield Bowl at 9 p.m. on July 31 for Paxton.
