Comments from a Michigan Chamber of Commerce meeting leave local seniors fuming

Posted: Updated:

"They're just out of touch."

Cleave Yarbor is just one of several Flint area seniors fuming over comments made during a Michigan Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday.

"They haven't worked for their money. They are sitting up there making decisions and taking people's money," Yarbor said.

According to Citizens for Fair Taxes, Chamber representative Tricia Kinley said: "It's too bad that folks that got a free ride with tax free pensions are unhappy about that."

That comment was made during a discussion about where money to fix our roads would come from - taxing state pensions, or increasing the taxes on corporations in Michigan.

But according to Kinley, who is opposed to increased corporate taxes, her statement doesn't appear to be what it seems.

"They are absolutely taking this out of context. They don't want the public to understand how damaging this proposal would be to our business climate," Kinley said.

Instead of more tax cuts for corporations, many seniors feel that places like the Brennan Center should actually be getting more money.

"I don't think that you should bring corporations in over the backs of seniors. Seniors are living on fixed incomes, corporations are making money all over the world," said John Harvey.

While it doesn't look like senior centers in our area will get any more money anytime soon - the residents who use them say they'd like to keep more money in their own pockets.
