BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Many doctors say "breast is best" when it comes to feeding babies.

Today moms here in Mid-Michigan, like Ann Trudell, and across the country are showing their support of the practice all at once.

"I’ve been trying to get her to latch for the last seven weeks. The last three days I finally did get her to latch and it was the big latch on so I wanted to share my victory," Trudell said.

Nursing moms like Trudell taking part in the "global big latch on" this morning. Thousands began breastfeeding at the exact same time.

"They all latched on on-time for a full minute so they were all counted," said Becky Morgan, an organizer.

Organizers hoping to set a new world record, topping the 2013 total of 14,536 women.

Morgan said it's a creative way to get people involved and raise awareness about a natural option of getting babies the nutrition they need to grow up healthy.

"Breast milk is such a great start for all babies in life. It's the most nutritious, most easily digestible, providing them strong immune systems. So it's all very important their health, for a lifetime of health," Morgan said.

Even moms who no longer breastfeed because their babies aren't babies anymore came out to show their support.

"I think it's great for the community. We're all out here supporting the same cause. I think that breastfeeding is best for babies," said Marcy Chambers.

Trudell said she appreciates the encouragement.

She said while breastfeeding isn't always the easiest option for moms, the connection it creates for her and her daughter Maggie makes it well worth the effort.

"It's just something me and her can do. It's not something her and her dad or her brothers. It just makes me feel important as a mom and special," Trudell said.
