Leadership workshop aims at building communication skills, community involvement

"One of the things that we do is create an environment where they can communicate and learn from and with each other," said Bart Crawford.

Crawford is a facilitator for Leadership Now, a workshop aimed at improving leadership skills. Twelve high-profile professionals from Flint and Genesee County participated in the first class of Leadership Now held at the Warwick Hills Country Club.

This intensive year-long commitment to make this region better is fueled by the Flint-Genessee Chamber of Commerce and the United Way.

With signs of encouragement all around, those in attendance recognize right away how this workshop will impact their lives, like participant Alexandria Harris.

"Being able to concentrate on areas of weakness I am able to become, just overall a well-rounded person a good leader and that should certainly and I find this experience invaluable," Harris said.

Communication is the key in any role of leadership and that why these future leaders of Genesee County are paired up with partners in this exercise.

Building trust is vital if you expect someone to follow. And managing in a diverse team while creating and implementing a vision is a must, while developing followers for achieving great results.

Richard Russell got a firsthand look at gathering that bond with a total stranger in class.

"That's one thing this community has struggled with for a long time to be able to trust the leaders in the community," Russell said.

Glen Fayolle of Vertex Innovations, understand this process and why working together works.

"Individually it's not going to be possible so that's what we're trying to do build a stronger team for the community, so that can solve their problems," Fayolle said.
