Counterfeit bills may be circulating in Mid-Michigan

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Summer weekends can be spent combing garage and yard sales, this is the time of the year when bargains can be found for as cheap as a buck.

"Just trying to make a little money off of stuff we don't need," said Debbie McKillop.

McKillop will be selling stuff all weekend in her flushing home.

"Most people will just generally buy two or three dollars, that's it."

But she said it all adds up.

But police warn, the little money you think you’re making, might not be worth the paper it’s printed on.

"The counterfeit bills were pretty realistic looking....it looked close enough to a 20 dollar bill where they didn't question it at first," said Chief Mark Hoornstra, Flushing Police.

The bogus bills are being passed at garage sales, and suspects exchange them for a cheap item and some change.

"Really kind of looking to profit on the change as opposed to really trying to get the merchandise," Hoornstra said.

McKillop said today is the first she’s heard of this, but there is a trick to keeping yourself safe.

Genuine $20-bills have watermarks, visible when you hold them up to the light.

Police said checking bills is a good practice, and one McKillop said she’ll be doing so she’s not ripped off.

"Hoping people would be honest, yeah, honest, coming to a garage sale, you know, so, but you never know now a days,” McKillip said.
