Rural community devastated by storm, tornado damage

OWENDALE, MI (WNEM) -

“[There were] high winds, the clouds were just massive gray black clouds.”

Manuel Thies is talking about Sunday evening’s storms which produced a tornado that pummeled the rural community of Owendale.

Crews spent today beginning the clean-up process. The damage: devastating and unreal.

The twister tore down Main Street, destroying much of this construction company.

It also snapped trees like toothpicks before taking aim at the town high school.

Alan Kretzschmer is with the public works department and he’s part of one of the many crews working to clean up the damage and downed power lines.

"The building behind me is Kuhl Construction. They do metal fabricating. I think that building is a total loss," Kretzschmer said.

Kretzschmer expects power to be out for three to four days.

"I really don't know where to start,” Kretzschmer said. “I've never experienced anything like this."

For Thies, seeing all this damage happen right before his eyes is an experience he doesn't want to live through again.

"Wind was so strong you couldn't see the neighbor's house with the wind and rain coming down," Thies said.
