Tune-Up Week kicks off tour of classic cars

FLINT TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Cool, colorful, classic cars lined up for all to admire today at ITT Tech in Flint Township.

George Connell lives in Alabama and used to live right here in Mid-Michigan.

"I love this. I built these cars for 30 years," Connell said.

He hopped in the 1941 white pickup he restored and hit the highway.

He arrived in Mid-Michigan just in time for Tune-Up Week's big kickoff event: a ’50s party, featuring dozens of old school cars and trucks.

"It's the style, it's the curves, it's the colors that the old cars have was great," Connell said.

A 1975 Electra 225 is Charles Miller's pride and joy.

"I love this car," Miller said.

He bought it brand new, right off the assembly line for $7,500. Miller recently had it appraised and said it’s worth $40,000.

"I bought it in 1975 and just held on to it. I only have 71,000 miles on it. Everything is original," Miller said.

Janet and Phillip Gifford own a 1934 canary yellow, three-window Ford.

They take her to car shows near and far, but say there's nothing quite like the shows around the Vehicle City for Tune-Up Week.

And the reactions make it all worth it.

“Wow, look at that. Thumbs up! A lot of the kids like it too. They get in and take pictures,” Janet Gifford said.

This, marks the beginning of a busy two weeks for car lovers.

George Connell said he’s revved up and ready for the rest of the events this week and for all the "back to the bricks" festivities next week.

"I’m going to try to make every event in the next two weeks. Everyone I want to be at. Then I can just put it in my little book. It’s a bucket list and I’ve done it," Connell said.

So, if you see a ’41 pick-up with Alabama plates cruising around Mid-Michigan, just wave to George.
