Leaders at Covenant hospital announced a big achievement: the hospital has been designated as a "baby friendly" birth facility.

"It took all of us to be able to say breastfeeding is best breast feeding is important and have people understand the data behind that," said Connie Downing.

The initiative honors hospitals and birthing centers that offer some of the best care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

Stacey Terrian is a lactation counselor at Covenant.

"Human milk for human babies, it's natural but it doesn't always come easily, so it's important to get educated and get the support system in place," Terrian said.

Along with breast feeding, Terrian said it's also about providing the best environment for mom and baby.

“We've been having babies stay in rooms and having skin to skin contact after birth for a while now,” Terrian said.

Covenant is one of only 10 hospitals to be recognized as baby friendly. It's the only hospital in Mid-Michigan to receive the honor.

"We're just really proud of it because we know how important it is to get moms and babies off to a good start with breastfeeding," Terrian said.
